Cyrus Alexander sat just off the pace through the early stages of the race before taking command in the stretch and pulling away to win the G3 Lone Star Park Handicap by three-and-a-half-lengths May 30.
The four-year-old colt provided his sire, Medaglia d’Oro, with his second Stakes winner of the day, after his daughter, Bar Of Gold, captured the Critical Eye Stakes at Belmont Park.
Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, Cyrus Alexander was purchased by Spendthrift Farm and Stonestreet Stables for $1,700,000 at the 2013 Keeneland September Yearling sale. Cyrus Alexander is out of Supercharger, making him a half-brother to 2010 G1 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, and to Brethren, winner of the G3 Sam F. Davis Stakes. Supercharger is a full-sister to G1 winner and Darley stallion, Girolamo, and to Daydreaming, winner of the G2 Top Flight Handicap.
Medaglia d’Oro is the sire of 87 Stakes winners, including 2016 G1 winner Songbird, last year’s Eclipse Award winner, and Mshawish, now a G1 winner on both dirt and turf. No sire in North America has more G1 winners this year. Medaglia d’Oro’s lifetime number of Group or Graded winners totals 45, a number that also includes Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra and 2016 G1 Golden Slipper winner Vancouver.
Medaglia d’Oro will stand the upcoming breeding season at Kelvinside at a fee of $110,000 inc. GST.
