Bernardini gets second Stakes winner on the day

Dame Dorothy takes Malvern Rose for owner Bobby Flay

Dame Dorothy served up a nice win for her owner, chef Bobby Flay, as she won for the third time in as many career starts, and winning for the first time in Stakes company in the Listed Malvern Rose at Presque Isle Downs in Pennsylvania.

Although she hadn’t started since early this year, Dame Dorothy broke well to settle into fifth place as the field approached the first turn. She advanced steadily down the backstretch and on into the turn and eventually went by the front runners to win by a comfortable margin.

Bred by Derry Meeting Farm in Pennsylvania, Dame Dorothy was purchased by Flay at the 2012 Keeneland September Sale for $390,000. She won her career debut at Aqueduct in November of last year and the followed with a 12-length triumph at Gulfstream Park in January. She is a half-sister to multiple G1 winner Mrs. Lindsay.

About 90 minutes earlier on August 10th, Bernardini fillies Cavorting and Angela Renee finished first and second in the G2 Adirondack Stakes at Saratoga giving their sire his ninth Group or Graded winner on the year. His total number of lifetime Group or Graded winners stands at 33 and include nine G1 winners. Go Indy Go and Boban were victorious this year at the highest level in Australia, while Stay Thirsty and Alpha won back-to-back Travers Stakes in 2011 and 2012 in North America, and other son To Honor And Serve winning multiple G1 events as well.

Bernardini will stand the coming breeding season at Kelvinside at a fee of $33,000 inc. GST.
