Authoritative Approach

With the emphasis of late on the lack of quality Australian-bred stayers, two Epsom Derby winners with their first-crop of yearlings available in 2012 could aid in solving the problem

Both Champions in their own right, multiple G1 winners Authorized and New Approach, have many things in common. Both are by son of the incomparable Sadler’s Wells, G1-winning juveniles, multiple G1-winning Champion three-year-olds, and both have their first southern hemisphere crops of yearlings going through the sale rings in 2012.

Famed for his brilliant acceleration and higher rated at both two and three than fellow Derby winner High Chaparral, Authorized broke his maiden as a two-year-old in the G1 Racing Post Trophy before returning for his Classic season to not only win the G1 Epsom Derby by five lengths, but defeat Dylan Thomas, Notnowcato and Duke Of Marmalade in the G1 Juddmonte International.

Authorized is already the sire eight individual winners to date from his first northern hemisphere crop including wide-margin maiden winners Estrela and Colima – both being targeted at Oaks campaigns – one-for-one Derby entrant Tamarrud, the unbeaten Witnessed plus the exciting Wintergreen, Tenenbaum and Danchai.

With his first yearling heading through the ring late on day two, the bay colt will be offered by Torryburn Stud (lot 327). Receiving a significant pedigree update during the spring carnival through the deeds of his half-brother Under The Eiffel, who took out the G3 Sandown Stakes over 1500m, this bay colt is out of the Stakes-performed Danehill mare Spire. From an international black-type family, this colt is sure to create a favourable impression being the first yearling by Authorized offered in Australia.

The other offering by the brilliant Epsom Derby winner is a bay filly out of the Flying Spur mare Wedge (lot 807). Consigned by Queensland-based outfit Clearwater Farm, this filly is a half-sister to the Stakes-performed Butzie. From the family of G1-performers Our Cure, Pure Energy, Segments and Big Grey Roo this filly, like the above mentioned colt, contains the bloodlines of some of the most influential stallions of modern times, in not only Sadler’s Wells, but Danehill as well.

Undefeated as a juvenile and duly crowned the Champion two-year-old of Europe, New Approach’s victories in the G1 Dewhurst and the G1 National Stakes gave the indication that he was a colt of immense quality.

Returning for his three-year-old season, New Approach won a further three G1 races, highlighted by his stunning six-length, course record breaking victory in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket. Having taken the G1 Derby and the G1 Irish Champion Stakes en-route to his Champions Stakes victory, New Approach was awarded the top honour of Champion three-year-old in Europe.

Impeccably-bred, by Galileo and out of the two-time Champion Park Express, New Approach’s first-crop in the southern hemisphere included the progeny of G1 winners She’s Archie, Star Shiraz and Zagalia; the dams of G1 winners Fashions Afield, Fiumicino and Marble Halls; daughters of G1 winners Horlicks, Joie Denise and Ha Ha; plus half-sisters to G1 winners Lonhro, Eremein, Sunday Joy, Niello and Tuesday Joy.

With a handful of these heading for the sales rings in 2012, the upcoming Magic Millions will see four yearlings colts offered.

Duncan Grimley’s Glastonbury Farms will offer two of the four colts, the first and the last within the five-day sale. Kicking off with lot 113, the colt is out of the unraced Rory’s Jester mare Marokish, a half-sister to G1 winners Universal Prince and Universal Queen, both of whom are by Sadler’s Wells line stallions, as is their close relation, the G1 VRC Derby winner Blevic.

Three lots later, Strawberry Hills will present lot 116, arguably one of the best-bred colts in the sale. Out of the Stakes-performed Fusaichi Pegasus mare Mary Marvel, herself a half-sister to G1 winners Tuesday Joy and Sunday Joy (the dam of five-time G1 winner More Joyous), the pedigree page within the catalogue contains nine individual G1 winners who between them have recorded 20 G1 victories.

South Australia’s leading breeder Mill Park will offer lot 310, the fifth foal out of the Irish-bred city winning Flying Spur mare Sizzie ‘Em. Already the dam of the multiple Stakes-placed Galileo mare Miss With Attitude (who has recorded another win since the catalogue went to print), the colt on offer is bred on the exact same cross.

Early on day three of the sale, the final New Approach yearling goes through the ring (lot 408), once again consigned by Glastonbury Farms. The colt is the first foal of the unraced Redoute’s Choice mare Vonzelle, a half-sister to G1 Salinger Stakes and Oakleigh Plate winner Sudurka. From the family of Stakes winners My Brilliant Star, Shot Of Thunder, Celebrity Princess, Lachlan River and French Bid, the colt is very much in the mould of his sire.

Once the Magic Millions sale finishes, we move into the Inglis Classic yearling sale where Authorized has five yearlings catalogued. We then head across the Tasman to the New Zealand yearling sales where Authorized and New Approach have four and three yearlings apiece catalogued, before we head to the Inglis Premier yearling sale where New Approach heads the way with 13 yearlings and New Approach with four.
